1969 Gibson Crest Gold, Serial Number 844280

Introduced in 1969, the Gibson Crest Gold was one of the more unusual and elaborately appointed archtop guitars of its era. Its fully hollow body was constructed from laminated Brazilian rosewood, paired with a three-piece maple neck and Brazilian rosewood fretboard, while two floating Johnny Smith mini-humbucker™ pickups kept the top free from pickup routs. Gold hardware, extensive binding, and rosewood appointments completed a model that stood apart even within the Gibson high-end archtop lineup. This example was produced in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on December 11, 1969. Only 208 Crest models were produced between 1969 and 1972, with 56 shipped during the model’s first year.

This 1969 Crest Gold is a very clean and highly original example. The Natural finish allows the Brazilian rosewood construction to remain the visual focus, with rich grain visible across the top, back, and sides. Deep, even lacquer checking is present throughout, but actual playwear is minimal. The guitar remains original throughout, including its hardware, electronics, plastics, nut, and frets.

The three-piece maple neck has a comfortable Medium C profile measuring .83" at the first fret and .99" at the ninth, with a 1 11/16" nut width. Its bound Brazilian rosewood fretboard features mother-of-pearl block inlays and retains its original medium frets and synthetic nut.

The original gold-plated hardware includes Kluson® Waffleback tuners with metal Keystone buttons, a floating rosewood bridge, and the distinctive three-bar trapeze tailpiece with its rosewood and mother-of-pearl Crest insert. The gold plating exhibits a fair amount of wear, particularly on the pickup covers. The bound rosewood pickguard remains in place and carries three small metal stickers bearing the original owner’s initials, “DLM.” A crack on the bass side of the original rosewood bridge has been professionally repaired.

The two original Johnny Smith floating mini-humbuckers measure 7.03k ohms in the neck position and 6.83k ohms at the bridge. The original electronics remain intact, including CTS potentiometers bearing partially visible 137692x codes, Sprague Black Beauty capacitors, and original Switchcraft® components. With both pickups suspended above the top rather than mounted through it, the Crest retains the open acoustic character of its fully hollow construction while offering a clear, full amplified voice.

At 6.73 pounds, the guitar feels light and responsive for a full-size archtop. It has a lively acoustic voice and plays comfortably throughout the neck, while the floating Johnny Smith pickups translate that character into a warm, articulate amplified sound. Between its rosewood construction, unusual electronics, and elaborate appointments, the Crest is a distinctive instrument even by the standards of late-1960s Gibson archtop design.

The guitar is accompanied by its original four-latch black and purple Lifton™ hardshell case, along with a 1972 sales receipt from Eckert Bros., Inc. in Pennsylvania and two photographs of the original owner with the instrument. Together, these materials provide a tangible connection to the guitar’s early history.

This instrument has received a professional setup and thorough inspection from Gibson Certified Vintage and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, Letter of Appraisal, new Limited Lifetime Warranty, and exclusive Gibson Certified Vintage accessories including a leather guitar strap, matching leather luggage tag, and vintage-style Gibson picks and pick container.
